Two Dreamfields Dedicated at Athens Park
The LA84 Foundation in partnership with the Dodgers Dream Foundation and the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, dedicated two new Dodgers Dreamfields on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Athens Park. Those on hand for the dedication ceremony included LA84 Foundation Patrick Escobar, Vice President Grants and Programs, Senior Vice President, Los Angeles Dodgers Howard Sunkin, Los Angeles County Supervisor, Second District Mark Ridley-Thomas and Director, County of Los Angeles, Department of Parks and Recreation Russ Guiney.
Dodger alumni Wes Parker, “Sweet” Lou Johnson, Bobby Castillo, Kenny Landreaux and Dodgers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi were in attendance and also led a clinic on the new field following the dedication for youngsters.
“The LA84 Foundation is pleased to have partnered with the Dodgers Dream Foundation and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation to create the Dreamfields at Athens Park,” said Escobar. “Youngsters who love baseball now have fields in which they can make their own dreams come true. We encourage parents to support the youngsters by volunteering to assist the teams in every way possible.”
“The Dodgers Dream Foundation’s Dreamfield program has been a tremendous success,” said Sunkin. “We’re pleased that the legacy we established with this program in the Los Angeles community will live on under the new ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers who have agreed to build the remaining 25 fields to reach our goal of 50 Dodgers Dreamfields in Greater Los Angeles.”
“We are thrilled to partner with the Dodgers Dream Foundation and LA84 to bring state of the art recreational amenities to Athens Parks,” Ridley-Thomas said. “These Dreamfields create inspiring platforms for youth to learn about teamwork and develop a healthy lifestyle, values we know will last a life time.”
Field improvements at Athens Park’s two Dodgers Dreamfields include refurbished chain link backstops, new dugout roofs, refurbished irrigation systems, regrading in both outfields for proper drainage, new infield mix, new sod in both outfields, new solar powered scoreboards and new field signage.
The number of Dodgers Dreamfields since the Doger’s initiated the program in 2003 now total 25. The LA84 Foundation has partnered with the Dodgers Dream Foundation to build 18 of these fields.
