Foundation’s Summer Swim Program Kicks Off Its 27th Year
It is summer. Youngsters throughout Los Angeles have the opportunity to learn to swim and participate in water polo, synchronized swimming and diving at their local public pool thanks to the efforts of the LA84 Foundation. This is the 27th year of the Foundation’s Summer Swim Program. This year’s program partners include the cities of Los Angeles, Burbank, Carson, Glendale, La Mirada, Long Beach, Palmdale, Pasadena, San Buenaventura, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, South Gate and Los Angeles County.
A press conference to announce the opening of the City of Los Angeles public pools, the LA84 Foundation Summer Swim Program and Kaiser Permanente’s Operation Splash program was held at Westchester pool on June 21, 2012. Kaiser Permanente’s Operation Splash provides funding to the Department of Recreation and Parks Aquatics Division to underwrite swim lessons for 6,000 low-income children, teens, and adults at 48 participating pools in Los Angeles; help fund junior lifeguard training; and extend the summer pool season.
LA84 Foundation Vice President Grants & Programs Patrick Escobar joined City of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, City Councilman Bill Rosendahl (District 11), Dr. Benjamin Chu, group president for Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Hawaii, Barry Sanders, President of the Board of Commissioners of the Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Los Angeles and Jon Mukri, General Manager, City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department at the press conference.
“The LA84 Foundation wants every child in Southern California to know how to swim. This is the 27th year we are offering a Summer Swim program in partnership with the city of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks and other municipalities so that youngsters can learn to swim and participate in aquatic sports,” said Patrick Escobar. “Programs like ours and Kaiser Permanente’s Operation Splash make it possible for thousands of youngsters in Los Angeles to gain new skills, feel comfortable in their neighborhood park pool, have fun, and enjoy the summer.”
“I am very pleased that through the efforts of the Mayor, the City Council, and our partners, Kaiser Permanente and LA84, we will be able to offer Los Angeles residents a full summer swim season at all of our pools, continuing this wonderful tradition,” said Jon Kirk Mukri. “I encourage everyone to come out to their local park and enjoy the pool and remember kids under the age of 18 swim for free.”
The Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department is celebrating its 100th anniversary of providing aquatics programs to Los Angeles City residents. Youngsters can contact their local pool for information regarding pool and program hours.
