LA84 Hosts Wiki Edit-A-Thon For Female Olympians and Paralympians
The LA84 Foundation, WISE LA, Southern California Olympians & Paralympians and the Wikimedia Foundation spent an evening ‘writing some wrongs’ at a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon hosted at the LA84 Sport History Library. In a session led by 2016 Wikipedian of the Year Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, an eager crowd created, updated and expanded Wikipedia articles relating to US women in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The group created or edited 25 athlete entries as part of a master list compiled by LA84 Foundation archivists.
Only 17 percent of biographical articles on Wikipedia are of women, according to research by the WikiProject Women in Red. The Wiki Edit-A-Thon is another step in the LA84 Foundation’s continued commitment for gender equity in sports. The event featured a number of speakers, which included Stephenson-Goodknight, LA84 Foundation President and CEO Renata Simril, 12-time Paralympic medalist Candace Cable, four-time gold medalist swimmer John Naber, 1984 Olympic swimmer John Moffet, and LA84 President Emeritus, 1976 Olympic rowing medalist and IOC member Anita DeFrantz, who recently became the second woman to receive a plaque in the Los Angeles Coliseum Memorial Court of Honor. More than 30 editors were on site taking part, with experience levels ranging from first-time Wikipedia editor to longtime experts such as Stephenson-Goodknight.
More good news: It’s not too late to become involved in the Wiki Edit-A-Thon. The LA84 Foundation is continuing its goal of recognizing female American Olympians and Paralympians, and encourages our community to use the resources at the bottom of this page to continue editing Wikipedia entries.
