National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation and LA84 Foundation Issue RFP to Refurbish Local Basketball Courts
LOS ANGELES (June 11, 2018) – Today, the National Basketball Players Association Foundation and the LA84 Foundation are pleased to issue an RFP to refurbish local basketball courts in underserved communities in Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. As a part of the legacy of the 2018 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation has made a commitment to provide a total of $150,000 of grant funding for local communities. The LA84 Foundation will manage the grant process and distribution of program funds to local organizations. Individual grants of up to $25,000 will be available for capital improvement projects focused on basketball court refurbishment and renovation.
Los Angeles Laker Kyle Kuzma will be featured in a video released today that further promotes the launch of this RFP to non-profit organizations in the LA area. “I am happy to be a part of this announcement and to let people know about the opportunity to improve their local basketball courts with the help of the NBPA Foundation and the LA84 Foundation,” said Kuzma. The video can be viewed at www.la84.org/ball.
Sherrie Deans, executive director of the NBPA Foundation added, “We are excited to be working with the LA84 Foundation and local partners across the city to create amazing places to play for the children of Los Angeles.”
The NBPA Foundation and the LA84 Foundation recognize the importance of structured play and sports as a key part of youth development, supporting social emotional wellness, physical health, and academic success. Too often, opportunities to play are based on family income and zip-code, a phenomenon we call the “Play Equity” gap. Both organizations are working to close that gap with this program by increasing the number of courts and improving the quality of existing facilities that are available to kids and families in their own communities.
Renata Simril, president and CEO of the LA84 Foundation said, “The LA84 Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with the National Basketball Players Association Foundation. Working together, we can help leave a lasting legacy from All-Star Weekend to underserved communities. The NBPA Foundation’s commitment to Southern California communities helps us to close the play equity gap and ensure all children have equal access to sport.”
Because equity and opportunity are at the forefront of the Basketball Court Refurbishment Program, the LA84 Foundation will take into account the applicant’s degree of public access, demonstration of community need, condition of existing courts, and presence of quality youth programming. Additionally, any organization applying for the RFP must be a community-based organization, school district, or network of schools serving neighborhoods where a majority of the residents are low and moderate-income families and individuals.
Proposals must be submitted online and can be accessed at www.la84.org/ball.
When it comes to youth sports, it’s time to change the game. Locally and nationwide, much more work needs to be done, with 3.5 million kids, many of them from lower income communities, anticipated to lose access to school sports during this decade alone. This collaboration between the NBPA and LA84 is one example of many of what happens when people work together for a common cause.
