Street Soccer USA takes over L.A. Live
LOS ANGELES — Microsoft Square at L.A. Live is usually home to concerts, farmers markets and dance-offs, but for one day, it became a soccer mecca for the inaugural Street Soccer USA Cup on Aug. 18.
The LA84 Foundation proudly partnered with Street Soccer USA for a daylong tournament that is played four-on-four until a champion is crowned across several divisions.
Some big names were on-hand for the event, including; Eight-time NBA All-Star and MLS team owner, Steve Nash, former MLS defender and current online personality, Jimmy Conrad, former L.A. Galaxy goalkeeper and Director of the L.A. Galaxy Girls Academy, Kevin Hartman, Fox Sports commentator, Rob Stone, City Council President Herb J. Wesson and Street Soccer USA Founders, Rob and Lawrence Cann.
Nash, Conrad and Stone participated in the King of the Court competition, which also included Galaxy and LAFC ambassadors, as well as elected officials.
Once the King of the Court wrapped up, the Corporate Adult and Open Cup divisions crowned champions.
The tournament also featured teams from Street Soccer USA’s programs at the Children’s Institute, Operation Progress and the Union Rescue Mission playing in a youth showcase.
This was the second year Street Soccer USA held an event in Los Angeles, with last year’s pilot program taking place on Gramercy Place, right next to the LA84 Foundation. Street Soccer USA is an LA84 grantee.
Street Soccer USA is a national non-profit organization which harnesses the power of the world’s game to create a more level playing field for all.
In Los Angeles the program enrolled over 230 participants this spring in its free community club programs in Watts and Skid Row, but the initiative is just getting started with programs rolling out this fall with LAUSD’s Homeless Education Program and other partners.
The goal is to help people and communities thrive off the field and address the specific needs of some of the 17,500 homeless youth in Los Angeles.
