LA84 Library to Host Screening of New Babe Ruth Footage

Baseball history fans can enjoy a “Babe Ruth Double Header” at the LA84 Foundation Library, with two sessions on the Bambino, Monday September 24, at 6:00pm. October Productions presents “Unveiling the Babe” and “The Men Who Called the Shot.” Baseball writer Chris Epting will screen recently discovered footage of Ruth. Footage of Ruth is very rare. Less than an hour was known to exist until Epting’s discovery of two hours of home movie footage that includes Ruth and teammate Lou Gehrig, filmed in Orange County. Epting will explain the find, and its importance, and show portions of the film.

Author Morris Eckhouse’s “The Men Who Called the Shot” will mark the eightieth anniversary of Babe Ruth’s dramatic home run for the New York Yankees against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on October 1, 1932, one of baseball’s most mythic and iconic moments. Using film and sound recordings Eckhouse will focus on the broadcasters who described the event on the NBC and CBS radio networks. Graham McNamee, Tom Manning and Hal Totten (on NBC) and Ted Husing, Pat Flanagan and Bob Elson (on CBS) are legends themselves and, like Ruth, helped shape the game.

The LA84 Foundation Library is located at 2141 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. Admission is free.

Epting is the author of 19 books including Roadside Baseball, Los Angeles’s Historic Ballparks and his most recent work Baseball in Orange County. Eckhouse is the creator of the Magical Baseball History Tour and past Executive Director of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). He has appeared in Baseball’s Golden Age on Fox Sports Network, ESPN’s “SportsCentury-Bob Feller,” and “Modern Marvels-Baseball Parks” on The History Channel. He is the co-author of Where Cleveland Played-Sports Shrines from League Park to the Coliseum.
