Anita DeFrantz Passes Torch to New LA84 President Renata Simril
Mayor Eric Garcetti, 1984 LA Olympic Organizing Committee President Peter Ueberroth, LA24 Chairman Casey Wasserman, Gold Medalist Rafer Johnson and USOC CEO Scott Blackmun joined 250 other guests Thursday night, at the LA84 Foundation in Los Angeles, to honor Anita DeFrantz following her retirement as foundation president. Ms. DeFrantz passed an Olympic torch from the 1984 Games to new LA84 Foundation President Renata Simril in a symbolic gesture representing the next generation of LA84 leadership.
As LA84 begins its next chapter, the Foundation will continue to build on its legacy as the leading supporter of youth sports, education and outreach that impact millions of children each year
from diverse communities across this region and beyond.
In the first quarter of 2016, the foundation will invest $1.3 million to fund 26 nonprofit organizations across Southern California. Among them is LA’s Best, an after-school sports program active in 188 Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools, which received funds to help fund equipment and athlete expenses.
LA84 has the potential to impact even more young people in the years to come by encouraging their love of sport and providing a national model for how positive sports programming and coaching can positively impact youth development.
