Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association
In the southernmost county of Southern California, one organization is turning physical disabilities into empowering opportunities through sport. The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association (ASRA) is the only organization of its kind in San Diego County, offering year-round adaptive sports leagues, clinics and recreation opportunities.
Its flagship feature? Its Wheelchair Basketball program. A 2016 LA84 Foundation grant doubled the amount of ARSA teams to four, two varsity teams for youth aged 13 to 17 and two prep squads for the 12-and-under group. The two varsity teams play an eight-month season, working with the National Paralympic Committee and playing teams across the West Coast.
There’s still a sport for everyone among ARSA’s offerings. Sled hockey, wheelchair soccer, sitting volleyball, track & field and kayaking are options for youth ages four and up, while a yearly Junior Adaptive Sports Camp continues to open doors for kids who may have previously thought sports was not on the table.
“The LA84 Foundation facilitates the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association in providing an opportunity for the children in our community living with physical impairments to learn the fundamentals of different sports, as well as strengthen their skills while building lasting friendships, self-esteem and experiences that will last a lifetime,” Executive Director Burt Grossman said. “The LA84 Foundation has assisted with the costs of equipment and facilities to make these programs and dreams possible.”
