LA84 Foundation and Dodgers Dream Foundation Dedicate Dreamfield at Harbor City Recreation Center
The LA84 Foundation and the Dodgers Dream Foundation, in partnership with and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, dedicated a baseball Dreamfield on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Harbor City Recreation Center in Harbor City. Those on hand for the dedication ceremony included Anita DeFrantz, President, LA84 Foundation, the Honorable Joe Buscaino, Councilmember, District 15, Howard Sunkin, Senior Vice President, Los Angeles Dodgers, Mark Mariscal, Superintendent Pacific Region, City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Fox Sports West and PRIME TICKET Dodger host Patrick O’Neal served as emcee.
Field improvements at Harbor City Recreation Center’s Dodgers Dreamfield include a new chain link backstop, new dugout roofs, irrigation system, grading in outfield for proper drainage, infield mix, sod in the outfield, solar-powered scoreboard, and field signage.
Following the dedication, Dodger alumni Bobby Castillo, Kenny Landreaux, Bill Russell, and Derrel Thomas led a clinic on the new field.
“The LA84 Foundation is pleased to have partnered with the Dodgers Dream Foundation and the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department to create a Dreamfield at Harbor City Recreation Center,” said Anita L. DeFrantz LA84 Foundation President. “Youngsters who use the park now have a field in which they can improve their skills, have fun and make new friends. We encourage families to come out and support the players and ensure that every youngster who wishes to play has the opportunity to do so.”
“As someone who bleeds Dodger blue, I am thrilled to see the Dodgers Dream Foundation build a new baseball field at the Harbor City Recreational Center,” said Councilmember Joe Buscaino. “I grew up playing Little League and high school baseball, and it affected me in such a positive way. I know the youth in Harbor City will reap many of the same rewards having this dream field. Thank you to the Los Angeles Dodgers for such a significant contribution to our city.”
“It’s a great pleasure to dedicate the second Dodgers Dreamfield of 2012 and the first located in the South Bay community,” said Dodgers Dream Foundation Director and Senior Vice President, Los Angeles Dodgers, Howard Sunkin. “Following the first dedication of the year that highlighted our annual Community Caravan, we’re happy to once again join our generous partners today as we continue together toward another year of new Dreamfields throughout greater Los Angeles.”
“Harbor City Recreation Center marks the completion of the eighteenth Dodgers Dreamfield made possible through the efforts of the Dodgers Dream Foundation, the LA84 Foundation and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Through this partnership we now have eighteen fields donning a whole new look and better playability thanks to a myriad of upgrades.”
The Harbor City Recreation Center Dodger Dreamfield is the second dedication of 2012 following Normandie Recreation Center (February 8). In 2011, new Dreamfields were dedicated at dedicated at Northridge Recreation Center (February 15, 2011), Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center (April 2, 2011), Pecan Recreation Center (May 14, 2011), Lemon Grove Recreation Center (June 11, 2011), Pan Pacific Park (July 21, 2011), Valley Plaza Park (August 13, 2011), Mona Park (November 14, 2011), two at Ritchie Valens Recreation Center (November 19, 2011) and Toberman Recreation Center (December 19, 2011).
Since the beginning of 2011, the Dodgers Dream Foundation and the LA84 Foundation have created 11 new Dodgers Dreamfields in the greater Los Angeles area, increasing the number of Dreamfields to 20. Harbor City marks the 21st Dreamfield built. Three more Dreamfields will be built with Los Angeles County in the coming months, two Dreamfields at Athens Park and one at Lennox Park
