LA84 Foundation Releases 2012 Summit Report
The LA84 Foundation today released The LA84 Foundation today released LA84 Foundation 2012 Summit Report: Youth Sports & Academic Achievement.
The 2012 Summit brought together national experts in youth sports and education to discuss youth sports participation and academic outcomes. Four major points of consensus emerged at the Summit.
- There is a strong, well-documented correlation between youth sports participation and academic success, as well as success in other walks of life.
- The positive relationship between sport and successful academic performance does not hold for all young athletes or apply equally in all settings.
- Youth sports program design and the social context in which programs operate are critical factors in maximizing the positive impact of youth sports.
- More research is needed on several fronts to understand the complex relationship between sports and academics, including the extent to which the relationship is causal.
LA84 Foundation President Anita L. DeFrantz in the introduction to the report wrote, “Youth sports programs, when properly designed and managed, can play an important role in helping young people achieve academic success.”
Samsung was the Summit’s lead sponsor. Dow was a supporting sponsor. The United States Olympic Committee and United Way Worldwide were strategic partners.
