LA84 Foundation to Build All-Digital Library
The LA84 Foundation announced plans today to digitize its entire sports library. “Creating a digital library will ensure that our remarkable sports research materials are available online to Southern California and the world,” said Foundation President Anita L. DeFrantz. “Providing information to the public about the role of sport in society is central to the Foundation’s mission,” DeFrantz added.
“The LA84 Foundation has been a pioneer in the development of Web-based sport history information,” said Wayne Wilson, Vice President, Communications & Education. “This project will add to an already impressive digital collection. Digitizing the remaining traditional library will quadruple the size of our Web-based resource,” said Wilson.
The Foundation, in 1998, began a digital conversion of Olympic documents, with the permission of the International Olympic Committee, for publication on the Foundation’s website at www.la84.org. Since then the Foundation has added thousands of other sport-related documents to its website. Today the LA84 Foundation’s digital collection is the leading online source for sport history researchers, with 12 million file downloads a year.
The new digital project will begin in January 2013. Foundation officials estimate that the project, which will be done on-site with existing staff, will take three years to complete.
Digitized public domain publications will go directly into the LA84 Foundation’s existing Web-based digital collection, where they will be available at no cost to a worldwide audience of Internet users. Copyrighted materials will reside on an in-house local database for full-text access by visiting researchers.
The LA84 Foundation Sports Library covers all aspects of sport with more than 40,000 printed volumes, thousands of archival documents and 90,000 photographs.
The LA84 Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The Foundation makes grants to Southern California youth sports organizations, educates coaches and examines critical issues related to youth sports. The Foundation has committed $206 million to its mission while funding 1,100 organizations serving 3 million young people.
