LA84 Hosts 2018 Winter Olympic Games Kickoff Celebration
The LA84 Foundation hosted a sold-out PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony celebration on its campus Friday, welcoming more than 250 members of the Olympic, Paralympic and LA84 communities for a night of festivities and sport. The event featured viewing of the Opening Ceremonies for the 2018 Games, a meet and greet with more than 15 Olympians and Paralympians attendance, a taste of Korean cuisine, Korean-based performing arts showings, an indoor curling demonstration, and the unveiling of new LA84 exhibits featuring the foundation’s vast Olympic memorabilia collection and knowledge.
Remarks were made by Kim Wan-Joong, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, and LA84 President & CEO Renata Simril. Also present was Sam the Eagle, the official mascot of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as well as Soohorang and Bandabi, the official mascots for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, respectively.
Friday’s event was hosted in collaboration with the Southern California Olympians and Paralympians Association (SCOPA) and the Korean Cultural Center, with additional support from the Korea Foundation. The event was sponsored by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling.
The celebration featured the opening of a Winter Olympics exhibit entitled Snow Time! Olympic Winter Games Posters. The exhibit is a sampling of Olympic Winter Games posters from the LA84 Foundation collection. Some are the official posters created by the host organizing committee, others, by the travel industry. Together, they illustrate the transition from the modern art graphic design of the early to mid-20th century to a more computerized, marketing-driven graphic design branding using Olympic Games emblems as the primary image to announce the Olympic Winter Games. The exhibit will remain on display through May 2018. The celebration also showcased an exhibit featuring notable Southern Californians in the winter sports world.
