National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation and LA84 Foundation Award $50,000 in Grants to Refurbish Local Basketball Courts
LOS ANGELES (October 18, 2018) – Today, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation joins the LA84 Foundation in awarding Proyecto Pastoral and Legacy LA $50,000 in grants to refurbish their basketball courts. Each organization received a $25,000 grant. The NBPA Foundation/LA84 Foundation Court Refurbishment Program is designed to provide safe, fun spaces for youth ages 6 -17 to play basketball in the communities where they live, go to school, and play. As a part of the legacy of the 2018 NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles, the NBPA Foundation has made a commitment to provide a total of $150,000 of grant funding over a three-year period for basketball court refurbishments in Southern California. In this first inaugural year, two organizations were selected to receive Court Refurbishment awards of $25,000. The LA84 Foundation’s goal, #PlayForAll, aims to provide every child with the opportunity to become life ready through sports, regardless of zip code, gender, or socioeconomic status. This grant is a step towards accomplishing that goal.
“We are thrilled to share the news with both organizations today,” said Sherrie Deans, Executive Director of the NBPA Foundation. “Proyecto Pastoral and Legacy LA both serve as much-needed centers of youth development & recreation in the Boyle Heights/East LA communities and we look forward to aiding their work through these refurbishment projects.”
Renata Simril, president and CEO of the LA84 Foundation said, “The LA84 Foundation is thrilled to partner with the National Basketball Players Association Foundation on the Court Refurbishment Program. This is a great example of how individual athletes have come together to have real sustained impact in local communities. The NBPA Foundation’s commitment to Southern California communities helps us to close the play equity gap and ensure all children have equal access to sport.”
Proyecto Pastoral empowers the community of Boyle Heights through grassroots projects in education, leadership, and service. The organization was founded in 1986 by Father Greg Boyle, S.J. and by community residents in response to pervasive poverty and gang violence, low educational attainment of children and youth, and limited economic and civic engagement opportunities for community members. As part of their comprehensive approach, Proyecto Pastoral offers sports programming in the community of Boyle Heights through their IMPACTO program at the Aliso Pico Recreation Center. The grant will enable them to replace broken floor panels and the underlayment of the floor, replace wood benches that are more than 20 years old and hazardous, and purchase wall mats to reduce the risk of injury. These repairs and enhancements will support the 650 youth who attend sports and recreational activities at the Aliso Pico Recreation Center.
Legacy LA’s mission is to make positive interventions in the lives of young people by offering alternatives to gangs and violence and building the capacity of each youth to reach their full potential, equipping them with the tools to transform their lives and their community. Legacy LA partners with the LAPD Ramona Gardens Community Safety Partnership (CSP) to provide team sports activities, including basketball and football to underprivileged and “at-risk” youth living in the Ramona Gardens housing development and surrounding community. Funding from the grant will be used to refurbish the outdoor courts at Ramona Gardens, including complete resurfacing of the courts, and new backboards and rims. With the court improvements, sports programs will be able to expand to serve 300 kids.
The LA84 Foundation has been a game-changer in youth sports for over 30 years, investing over $230 million throughout Southern California’s communities. Locally and nationwide, much more work needs to be done, with 3.5 million kids, many of them from lower income communities, anticipated to lose access to school sports during this decade alone.
One player, one coach, one mentor, one partner at a time, the LA84 Foundation is playing forward its thirty plus year legacy. LA84 and its partners are coming together to support the next generation of Southern California leaders, athletes and Olympians to ensure access to sports isn’t determined by zip code.
