Sam the Eagle, popularly known as Sam, was born on August 4, 1980, one day after the Closing Ceremony of the Moscow Olympic Games. Sam served as the official mascot of the 1984 Olympic Games, making public appearances and lending his/her image to Olympic publications and memorabilia. Sam’s parents, Walt Disney Productions, gave Sam seven colors – red, white, dark blue, light blue, yellow, black and brown. Sam’s physique, which is highly unusual if not unique among eagles, enables Sam to take part in a wide range of Olympic sports. As an eagle, Sam embodies the national symbol of the United States and the Olympic Motto: Higher, Faster, Stronger. Since 1984, Sam has remained active in the Olympic Movement, frequently participating in events that promote the Olympic Spirit.
